Short Description
A robust opportunistic bryozoan, capable of enduring a wide spectrum of temperatures and salinities, as well as high organic content. Settles on a wide range of anthropogenic and natural substrata.
Introduction Pathway
The undetermined Pacific origin of the species (belonging to the species complex T. porteri-occidentalis-inopinata) suggests that the first Mediterranean introduction was very likely due to oyster import. Secondary introductions are possibly due to small vessels (small commercial vessels, yachts, fishing boats in coastal routes) or dispersed with currents on floating fragments of Sargassum.
Distribution
- Native Range
- Cryptogenic in temperate Pacific: North America, Japan to Taiwan, Australia.
- Known Introduced Range
- New Zealand; Mediterranean: northern Adriatic Sea; northeast Atlantic, from Galicia (Spain) to the Netherlands.
- Trend
- In 1982 T. inopinata was first collected in the Venice Lagoon, Italy, where its populations peaked in the late 1980s, and has since declined somewhat. In 1996 it was first observed in the Atlantic, in the northwest of Spain, in 1998 it was observed in south England. In 2000 it was found in several locations in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, where it is widespread and abundant. It seems to form rapidly expanding populations.
